The beach - my calm during Covid-19
Told to stay at home, not see friends, work cancelled... being the people person I am, I'd understand if I struggled a little. Or a lot. But one thing kept me aligned during Covid-19. And that is my daily visit to the beach. The place I call my soul home. Where I get fixed.
I always feel refreshed and clear after being at the beach. Surfing, walking, sitting, swimming - it doesn't matter. Saltwater, sea air, sand between the toes, the sound of waves crashing. Preferably with a dose of sunshine.
During Covid-19 'stay at home' time, I went to the beach every day. Mainly walking, some surfing and no swimming. It's cold in April!
I walked a lot and started to look at things closer. The colours, the atmosphere, the patterns, the way things changed each day. The way the sand and rocks change as the tide comes in and out. The objects that are left stranded on the beach. And the evidence of other people reaching for their respite.
I'd return home with a clear mind - ready to tackle my day. Not sitting on the sofa getting bored but working on my business, myself and being the best I can be.

CLIENT: Fleurieu Living Magazine
I’m heading to the launch of Autumn 2020 tonight… so here are some photos from Summer 2019/20. Oops, a bit behind…
I love working with Fleurieu Living Magazine. Exploring, meeting new people, having laughs, telling stories…
What is Copyright?
Before we start (aka my Disclaimer)... I'm a photographer, not a writer. I tell stories through photos, not words. So I hope I make sense of this very confusing topic. I’ve been asked a few times lately to try and explain…
Need to give the media or another company photographs? Want to use someone else's photo?
Keep yourself out of trouble and always ask...
Where did it come from?
Do you have the rights to use this?
Do I have the rights to give this to a third company/someone outside of my business?
It all comes down to Copyright and what Licence and Usage Rights you have.
So what is Copyright? Apart from being a fancy circled C.
Basically, it's the ownership of the photograph or other artistic work.
Who owns it?
On a commercial shoot, the photographer does. Except photographs taken for State, Federal and Territory governments and agencies (but not local councils).
What am I paying for when I hire a photographer then?
You are paying for usage rights of the photographs created for the purpose stated in the contract.
What sort of usage rights are there?
Many. From periods, web, specific campaign, pamphlet, in-house newsletter, social media.... (I’ve included my standard one at the bottom of this page)
What can I use my photos for?
This varies, and it will be stated in your contract. Some photographers permit usage for specific purposes within the fee; others will give full usage to use photographs for different purposes within the business.
I said I need them for my website but now want to run a campaign with them. What do I do? Check your terms and conditions. Contact your photographer. If it's not included in the original fee, negotiate an extra use fee.
Can I edit my photos? Normally, no. A photographer will charge you for their final photographs which are already retouched to their standard. You have paid to use the photograph that they createdChat with your photographer if you need to change anything.
Can I give them to the models or someone else to use? Check your terms and conditions/contract. This would incur an extra fee.
Often, things are created for a specific purpose and usage rights are sold to you for that purpose only. Creative products like videos and photos are not sold like a physical product; they are sold for a purpose. The value is on the purpose.
So, as you can see, it's very important to give as much detail to your photographer BEFORE the quoting process, as there are a lot of variables. It's also good to be aware of if you are comparing quotes - see what is included.

The number one takeaway is read the contract and terms and conditions. Understand what you can do with the photograph. Ask your photographer to clarify. Every photographer works differently, so it's important to check.
What do I normally include in my commercial shoots?
A licence for my client to use the image for all purposes, for as long as the wish, to promote their business only. They are not permitted to allow third parties to use the image for third party advertising.
An example. My client is a winery. I photograph a group of people having a gorgeous picnic at the winery. We source a platter from the local caterer for people to 'nibble' on in the photo. My client is the winery. The local caterer is not. If the caterer would like to use the photo, they must contact me.
CLIENT: Birdsville Hotel
A photo shoot at the iconic Birdsville Hotel in outback Queensland.
Built in 1884, the Birdsville Hotel is iconic. I've heard about it for years. It's a destination in its own right. And last year I got there! I flew up with Arid Air for a weekend photoshoot - I guess the 'cushy' way, but one day I'll do the track. I've heard it's an experience not to be missed. Perhaps for the Big Red Bash?

CLIENT: West Beach Parks
West Beach Parks - an impressive line up of facilities. See the recent photos from a heidi who photos shoot.
Want to get away but not have to drive for hours? I've been told many people come and stay here so that they can escape the norm. It's central, on the coast and has everything. This is definitely the place to come to make sure the kids have fun - and give you enough time to enjoy your cuppa and book in peace.
Pools, games rooms, waterslides, waterpark, playground, jumping pillow, cafe and now fitness centre, sensory room and loads of x-boxes (or whatever they are ;)). Seriously, you could have a whole morning or afternoon without seeing the kids!
I was back at West Beach Parks last month to photograph the upgraded games area plus the new gym and sensory room. I am impressed - caravan parks are offering so much now. Especially for families - it's a perfect accommodation choice. Maybe I'll be heading to West Beach next holidays?
CLIENT: Upalinna Station, Flinders Ranges
Upalinna Station in the Flinders Ranges. Ever stayed on a station? Check it out…
Upalinna means 'Little Water' in the Adnyamathana language.
Upalinna is a family-owned and operated working sheep station, located on the Eastern side of Ikara Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Don't do what I did and take The Outback Highway (towards Parachilna) out of Hawker then have to traverse the Moralana Scenic Drive track in a little VW. Makes for slow progress on the dirt and rock. Take the Flinders Ranges Way (towards Wilpena).
There are bush campsites and shearers quarters. Some very fancy shearers quarters that sleep 14 people.
Five bedrooms, classically styled kitchen, dining and lounge room with open fireplace and bread oven that's great for cooking pizza in. Outside is an entertaining area with bbq plus a firepit down by the creek. I loved standing virtually on top of the fire defrosting after photographing in the cold all day.
Check out the pics... a bit nice.
CLIENT: FRED Eatery
A great place in Aldgate.. Love working with these guys.
Really, no words needed. Just look at these pics. This place is very, very, very awesome. An easy drive through the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
CLIENT: Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, Dept for Environment and Water
Taking four strangers over to Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail for a 3 day shoot. Interesting times. It worked - we all loved it!
This is the second time I've done the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail in July - the middle of frosty winter! But instead of camping out on the trail, this time we stayed in the nearby Cape du Couedic Lighthouse Keepers Cottages, giving us the chance to warm up each night.
When my client asked if I would like to do this shoot - I jumped at the chance. I love KIWT and love working outdoors in a natural environment. A perfect shoot. Except that it was in the middle of winter in one of the most southerly and exposed parts of South Australia. Hmm.
We got very lucky. The first day was overcast with grey clouds and a sprinkle of rain but the following two days were sunny and blue skies. Considering part of the brief was to get multi-season hiking vibes, it worked perfectly.
This year I started a group for street casting - and I was very fortunate to take a group of four amazing people with me (and met some more crazy people over there to join our troupe). Two Clients, someone I had photographed for another client, and his friend met me early Monday morning and caught the Sealink ferry over. Nobody knew each other, which is a gamble when going away for two nights and three days of shooting. But I needn't worry - the group made 'best friends' with each other near instantly.
We photographed everyone in different styles and situations - solo, combos of couples, friends and mother and daughter.
We all had a great time. Many laughs, jokes and new friendships. Plus got lots of great photos.
Here are some of my fave pics.

Sayings that have been around for years and are still critical to your success.
Part of the foundation of a great marketing plan is awesome, professional photographs. Without them, your online (well, any marketing) presence fails. And let's face it, the world is going online. Customers and guests first impression of you is very likely to be online. Make it a good one. Create the connection. Show them how great you are.
Get in touch ASAP to take advantage of these tours. All shoots on tour have the added benefit of no travel fees.
